Removable Partial Denture
A removable partial denture is a device which replaces all the missing teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. A typical design is pictured below:
Partial dentures can also just replace one tooth, termed a Nesbit partial denture, pictured below:
PROS:
Low cost. All missing teeth in an arch are replaced with one device. Partial dentures can be an easy inexpensive long term solution for missing teeth.
CONS:
A removable device is not completely stable and catches some food debris. The hardware can be uncomfortable and requires constant removal and cleaning.
COST:
About $2100 per partial denture. A Nesbit is about $750. Insurance typically covers half the cost.
Thus, if seven teeth are missing from the lower jaw, all seven can be replaced with one device which costs the patient about $800-$900. The better option, dental implants, cost about $3500 per tooth replaced.
