Dental Bridges
All of your teeth play an important role in speaking, chewing and in maintaining proper alignment of other teeth. Tooth loss is inevitable; currently 97% of the U.S. population over the age of 65 has lost one or more teeth. It is essential that lost teeth be replaced to maintain stability as well as speaking and chewing functions. Fortunately, there are options for correcting tooth loss. Dental implants have replaced bridges as the best method for permanently fixing teeth in place, as implants do not involve sacrificing the tooth structure of adjacent teeth. Dental bridges are now only placed if an implant is not possible.

Tooth Bridges Belmont MA
A dental bridge, or simply bridge, permanently attaches artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth. Unfortunately the abutment teeth are permanently compromised; see the video clip on this page. Dental bridges are now only performed in the rare instances when dental implants are not possible.
How is a bridge placed?
Bridge placement usually takes two or three appointments to complete. At the first appointment the teeth on either side of the gap are prepared by removing a portion of the enamel and dentin. Accurate impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge is constructed. (The typical material is porcelain fused to a gold framework; no gold is visible) The bridge is permanently cemented to the abutment teeth at the final visit.
How do I take care of my bridge?
A strict regimen of brushing and flossing will keep the bridge and surrounding teeth clean. This is of critical importance as the bridge relies on the neighboring teeth for support.
